Free Search Engine Submission Pages
The BIG list of Search Engines, In Alphabetical order, not in order of size! Some search engines allow more than one page to be submitted for indexing, others are directories and allow only one page, or the home page to be listed. Just be sure to come armed with your web site descriptions and lists of keywords before attempting to submit your site to the directories. You will also see the term "Alexa traffic info". Alexa is a popular free tool that tracks how many people have visited a site over the past six months, who owns the site, and more. Click the "Alexa traffic info" link for up to the minute information on that site's traffic ranking Although Alexa is not completely accurate for popularity, it is as good as we have for a free tool! If you notice any links that have moved or stopped working, please email me so I can fix them and keep this list updated. If you know of a good search engine or directory that is not listed here, please tell me about it. Thank you! Note: This information is thought to be accurate, but may go out of date at any time. We are not responsible for errors, inaccurate data, changes, etc. This is a very basic guide, not a definitive list. Search engines, directories and a link to their Alexa traffic information. Alta Vista Alexa
traffic info Notes: A simple url (web page address) is all that's required to submit a page for free. Or you can use the paid LookSmart submission service. The free submit button is at the bottom of the search engine submission link. Then you'll need to decipher a code for every five web pages that you want to submit. AOL NetFind Alexa
traffic info Notes: The America Online web site. There is no true submit area as they have switched to the Open Directory with an Inktomi back up. Ask Jeeves Alexa
traffic info Notes: A search engine where you ask questions in plain English. Ask Jeeves offers many advertising and ecommerce options. Ad placement may be triggered by keywords, categories, channels or sponsorships. To get your site listed, you'll have to use the paid inclusion through ineedhits.com. Dogpile Alexa
traffic info Notes: Dogpile searches the web, including Yahoo!, Thunderstone, Lycos, A2Z, Goto.com, About (aka The Mining Company and Sprinks), Excite Guide, What U Seek, Magellan, Lycos, WebCrawler, Infoseek, Excite & AltaVista. It is also handy for searching the newsgroups both current posts and archives. Currently it first returns the results of GoTo, LookSmart, then FindWhat. Paid submission through Ah-ha. Excite Alexa
traffic info Notes: Excite results are provided by Ask, Google, and Inktomi. Fastest way to get into their index would be through paid inclusion with Inktomi. Fast.no (alltheweb.com) Alexa
traffic info Notes: One of the largest indexes of the internet but until August 1999 they didn't have a submission area. Sometimes the submit page is up, at other times it's down, check back in a few days to see if the submit area goes offline. An url is all that's required to submit to this search engine. Expect this search engine to grow in popularity as more search engines and portals start adding custom filtering to Fast technology. Go Alexa
traffic info Notes: Formerly the great Infoseek search engine, that once upon a time used to spider submitted web sites within 24 hours. Go.com is now Walt Disney's Internet portal with branded content including ESPN, ABCNews and Disney. GoHip! Alexa
traffic info Notes: A meta search engine that retrieves the top results from paid search engines like FindWhat and 7Search. Rapid growth was due to a viral marketing strategy that infected / affected users email. Home Page: http://www.google.com/ Notes: Here is what Google have to say about themselves. "A page has high importance if lots of other pages with high importance point to it. This well-defined notion of importance makes finding high quality sites easy." Translated, this means link popularity (how many incoming links), link relevancy (what the links say), and link quality (popularity of the sites linking to you) are very important. They've also added the Open Directory to their search results. Google continues to grow in importance. Its search results are accurate, and it's very easy to submit pages to it. Google News Groups (Deja News) Alexa
traffic info 431,418 (#23
+75.4%) Notes: Once known as dejanews.com and deja.com, it tried to put the newsgroups behind it and become a portal. The site has now been acquired and restored to its former glory by Google search engine. To get found in the newsgroups search area, submit a posting to an appropriate newsgroup using your favorite internet browser. HotBot Alexa
traffic info Notes: An url and email address are required to submit to this engine. It uses custom filtered Inktomi results through Direct Hit technology. Its directory is provided by Open Directory. This engine is owned by Lycos and run as a separate service. As of 8-6-03, I could no longer find a free submission link. InfoSpace Alexa
traffic info Notes: InfoSpace provides maps, directions and city guides to Alexa and other online services. They also provide a people and business finder to MSN Search. Search results on InfoSpace come from LookSmart followed by results from Goto, then Inktomi and others. You can use the large InfoSpace form (requiring keywords, description and MUCH more) to submit your site, but it's not clear where you'll come up in InfoSpace search results by taking the time to do so. Inktomi Alexa
traffic info Notes: Inktomi is a technology - not a search engine itself - that is used and branded by several major portals and search engines. Inktomi provides search results to over 50 partners, including AOL, MSN, HotBot, and iWon. They are now owned by Yahoo, which also owns Overture. The only service they seem to be offering is a "Pay per Click". LookSmart Alexa
traffic info Notes: Unless you are a non profit organization, you'll need to pay to get reviewed by a human editor. LookSmart is partnered with, and providing directory results for Microsoft's MSN, Excite@Home, AltaVista, and InfoSpace. Default web search results provided by Alta Vista. #12 Lycos Alexa
traffic info Notes: Lycos now seems to only accept paid inclusions. Search results include directory listings and reviewed sites, followed by paid GoTo links, shopping links and a couple of "found" web sites. Mamma Alexa
traffic info Notes: A popular meta search engine that retrieves top results from several other search engines. It also features Mamma's Collection, a pay for review service. MSN Search Alexa
traffic info Notes: Submissions are handled by LookSmart. Search results come from the LookSmart directory followed by Inktomi technology. Real Names and Direct Hit also have a presence. NBCi Alexa
traffic info Notes: Formerly known as Snap! it was a directory of sites compiled by human editors. Now more of a web portal. Netscape Search Alexa
traffic info Notes: This is the search area on Netscape. It is what you get when you click on the search button in the Netscape web browser. Search results come from Open Directory (dmoz.org). If there are no search results, there are just links provided to other search engines. Northern Light Alexa traffic info Notes: Not currently acting as a search engine open to the public, they expect to reopen later in 2003. Open Source Directory (DMOZ) Alexa
traffic info Notes: Being in this position on this list is a little bit misleading for the Open Directory. The Alexa visits only reflects the amount of users that went directly to dmoz.org. In reality, the Open Source Directory is a much bigger, second only to Yahoo in popularity. Several search engines use the Open Source Directory as their default searches, directory or portal, including Lycos, AOL and Netscape Search. In addition, there are several pieces of free software available which let users set up their own "directories", querying the Open Source Directory for all the listings. Find the most appropriate category and submit your site information from the Add URL link at the top of that category page. In other words, find the best place for your site to go, and click on Add URL from there. This directory has been widely adopted across the internet as competition for Yahoo and is run by hundreds of volunteer editors. Follow the same rules for submission as Yahoo! Keep your site descriptions free of brand names unless you own them, and remove any hype or self promotion. Yahoo Search Area:
http://www.yahoo.com/ This is the free search engine submission link: Yahoo is now providing free website spidering. Their "rules" or algorithms seem much more forgiving at this time than do Googles.
#24 Rediff Alexa traffic info 296,309 (#32 +313%) Notes: A search engine from India. The US version is here http://www.rediff.com/rediffus.htm #25 Search.com Alexa traffic info 294,834 (#25 +38.2%) Notes: Popularity is in part due to download.com which contains a vast shareware library. Search results come from GoTo, FindWhat, About and mostly paid sources. #26 Webcrawler Alexa traffic info 282,825 (#19 -7.5%) Notes: This search engine is owned by Excite and appears to be a smaller version of the Excite index. Webcrawler has the same binge and purge characteristics as Excite. Traffic at this former "top ten" search engine continues to fall in popularity. There is a form to fill out to submit your site that is identical to Excite's. #27 Bay9.com Alexa traffic info 264,456

They require an url, email and five or six keywords to submit. It's a "popularity" search engine where the results displayed are based on "actual search activity" and topics that other people have researched. Sites that people visit and "spend time at" for particular search topics are then ranked higher than other sites. This technology has been applied to several of the largest search engines and you can expect it to grow in the future. Several sources have reported "better" positioning when you submit your site directly to Direct Hit's add url link. Direct Hit is owned by Ask Jeeves. #30 ePilot Alexa traffic info 172,663 (#26 -14.9%) Notes: Another meta search engine getting its results from the usual paid sources. It is a paid service with a bidding system in place. Open an account and you can bid on keywords and key phrases within search results. You have complete control over how much you want to spend, where you want to be found, and when you want your program to be active. You pay only for click throughs. Back up search results come from Inktomi. #34 Anzwers Alexa traffic info 54,434 (#35 +10.3%) Notes: Australian Inktomi powered search engine. It operates entirely by querying other search engines including AltaVista, Excite, Infoseek, LookSmart, Lycos, About (aka The Mining Co), Thunderstone, Webcrawler, Yahoo!. But what is nice about this meta crawler, is that it then collates and assigns a score based upon what it finds in the other search engines. #38 Kanoodle Alexa traffic info 39,896 (#43 +41.4%) Notes: They provide bid-for-location system - in other words - it is a paid search engine, where you bid on keywords and phrases.
