1. Facts of the week: How to reach Internet users in Germany
According to WebSideStory, a webtracker company, Germany is the 6th biggest Internet nation of the world (after USA, China, Japan, United Kingdom and Canada).If you want to quickly reach customers in Germany, the easiest way is to advertise on pay per click (PPC) search engines.There are three important PPC search engines in Germany: Overture.de, .de and QualiGO.de.Overture.de claims to reach 73% of the German Internet population. They partnered with important search engines and Web sites:
- AltaVista.de
- AOL.de
- Arcor.de (German phone and Internet company)
- DINO-Online.de (popular German search engine)
- Dooyoo.de (kind of Epinions.com in German)
- Freenet.de (one of the bigger German ISP)
- GMX.de (big email provider)
- Kress.de (popular German magazine for advertisers)
- MSN.de
- PC-Welt.de (one of the bigger German PC magazine)
- T-Online.de (biggest German ISP)
- TecChannel.de (online magazine from IDG, media company)
- Tiscali.de (European ISP)
- ZDNet.de
.de has also some important affiliates, for example Lycos.de and Yahoo.de:
- Ciao.com (kind of Epinions.com in German)
- EasyInternetCafe.de (provider of Internet cafes)
- Fireball.de (popular German search engine, part of Lycos)
- HotBot.de
- Lycos.de
- Metaspinner.de (small German meta search engine)
- Netscape.de
- Sedo.de (search engine for domain offers)
- Stern.de (big German weekly magazine)
- Suchen.com (German search engine)
- Web.de (big German Web search engine and portal)
- WetterOnline.de (popular German weather Web site)
- Yahoo.de
QualiGO.de is the smallest of the important PPC search engines in Germany. They only have small partners like Blitzsuche.de and MetaCrawler.de.However, they claim to reach 56% of the German speaking population in Switzerland because of their partnerships with Bluewin.ch and T-Online.ch (both are big phone and Internet companies in Switzerland).In summary, reaching a German Internet audience is easy with these three pay per click search engines. Overture.de even offers their German advertising service in English.You should also submit your Web site to Google.de and to the German part of the directory "Open Directory Project":
2. Search engine news of the week
* SearchKing is sueing Google
The search engine SearchKing filed lawsuit against Google because Google dropped their PageRank. ( Read SearchKing's press release) .
* Google now advertises on their Usenet pages
Google now puts their AdWords text ads on some of their Usenet pages. Click here for an example .
* Google is still the #1 search site
OneStat.com, provider of real-time Web site analysis software, recently reported in a press release that:
"Google's global usage share has reached an all time high and has risen from 53.2 percent to 55.1 percent. Google's global usage share has increased 1.9 percent the last 2 months. Yahoo's global usage share remains stable. The second largest search engine on the Web has a global usage share of 20.6 percent." Read their press release in full length here .
* Radio advertising with search terms
The Wharton School of Business promotes their Web site in radio advertising. Since airtime is limited they decided to try a different way: they advertise only the search term "Wharton West" for which they're ranked #1 on Google.

3. How link popularity can help your rankings, part 4 of 5
How can you obtain high link popularity and a good PageRank so that your Web pages get a high ranking on Google and other popular search engines? Our 5 part series will help you.
Part 4: How to contact potential link partners
In part 3, we told you how to find good potential link partners. When you've found such high quality sites, it's important that you use the right words to contact the webmasters of these sites.
If you want them to link to your Web site, you have to be personal and politely. Emails like the following usually do NOT work:

other. That will increase your search engine ranking and

Many webmasters consider sending such messages as spamming. It's much more effective to use personalized email messages. They'll improve the chances of your link request message being read and acted upon favorably.
If you want positive feedback, you must convince the webmaster that you've really visited the Web site and that you know what the site is about.
Try to convince them that your Web site is related to their site and make it easy for potential link partners to link back to your site.
Here's an example:

As you can see, we've already linked to the other site before asking them for a reciprocal link. If you've already linked to a site, the webmaster is much more likely to answer your request.
