Welcome to a new issue of the Search Engine Facts newsletter.

This week we're telling you how meta directories can improve the link popularity of your Web site. In addition, the final article of our 5 part series gives you tips for a successful linking campaign.


1. Facts of the week: Another way to improve link popularity
If many other Web sites link to your site, chances are your site is relatively important.That's how search engines rank Web sites these days. If many quality sites link to your site, then your site has a high "link popularity" - and a high search engine ranking as well.There are two ways of increase your link popularity to improve your search engine ranking.1. Search the search engines for complementary sites and request a link exchange. As you probably know, this is very time-consuming unless you use a specialized software program such as the award-winning ARELIS.2. Another way to improve the link popularity of your site is to submit your site to industry specific and regional search engines and directories.For example, imagine your site provides fitness and diet tips. Then it'd be a good idea to submit your site to specialized health directories, for example healthweb.com, goodhealthdirectory.com, healthlinks.com or med411.com.Many of the specialized directories are indexed by the major search engines such as Google, AltaVista and AllTheWeb. For this reason, a link from those directories can improve your link popularity.In addition, those specialized directories can also bring targeted traffic to your site.But how can you find specialized directories? Fortunately, there are meta directories. These are directories for directories.Here's a list of meta directories that list directory sites where you can submit your Web site to.Beaucoup.com is a large directory which lists more than 2,500 search engines and directories:

2. Search engine news of the week

* Google filters Web sites on its local search sites

To avoid legal liability, Google excludes controversial Web sites on Google.de (German) and on Google.fr (French).

Google didn't disclose how many and which Web sites have been removed. The affected sites can still be found on Google.com.

* Google enables "Google Compute" feature

Google recently enabled "Google Compute", a new feature which is available solely through Google's toolbar.

From the Web page: "The goal of Google Compute is to make a contribution to science by enabling Google Toolbar users to easily donate their idle computer time to worthwhile causes. [...] work on complex mathematical problem from such fields as drug design and global climate modeling."

* FAST Search has won new partner site

Freeserve is the most popular ISP in the United Kingdom. They recently switched their Web search from Inktomi to FAST Search.

* Inktomi and Amazon.com continue to work together

Amazon.com has extended a deal with Inktomi so that Inktomi-driven search engines (for example MSN Search) can return Amazon.com product pages.

Both pay per click search engines Overture and FindWhat have reported an increase in sales and earnings.

3. How link popularity can help your rankings, part 5 of 5

How can you obtain high link popularity and a good PageRank so that your Web pages get a high ranking on Google and other popular search engines? Our 5 part series will help you.

Part 5: How to increase the success of your campaign

Until now, you've learned how to locate good potential link partners. In addition, you know which Web sites and services you should avoid if you want to obtain a good and long lasting link popularity.

You've also learned how to contact potential link partner sites and that a personal approach gets much better results than mass emailing sites.

Here are a few other important tips to increase the success of your linking campaign:

  1. Link to potential link partners first before you ask them to link to you.

    Tell potential link partners that you've linked to their site and tell them where they can find the link on your site. If you link to other Web sites first, more webmasters are willing to add a link back to your site.

    If you think that this is too much work, consider using a tool like ARELIS to manage your link pages.

    With ARELIS, you can quickly add new link partners to your site and you can also quickly remove them if they don't want to link back to your site. Building link pages in the design of your Web site requires only a single mouse click in ARELIS.

    ARELIS also checks if your link partners still link back to you and automatically removes them from your link pages if they don't link back to you anymore.

  2. Offer a "Link to us" page on your Web site.

    Make it easy for other people to link to your site. Offer a "Link to us" page on your site that contains sample HTML code that your link partners can copy and paste into their own Web sites. The easier it is for your link partners to link to your site, the more likely they're going to link to you.

    Here's an example of a "Link to us" page.

    On this Web page, there are three ready made HTML snippets at the end of the page that link partners can insert on their own link pages.

    With the snippets at hand, your link partners don't have to think about how to link to your site. A "Link to us" page also indicates that you're willing to exchange links. That means that other webmasters will approach you through that page.

  3. Make your link pages easy to find.

    Don't be surprised that no one wants to link to you if your link back to their site is hidden somewhere in your site and cannot be found by the average Web surfer.

    Make it easy for your visitors to find your links page. If you're afraid of losing visitors, you can open the links to other Web sites in a new window.

Conclusion

Building a good link popularity requires some work but the results will pay for it. Link popularity is already the most important factor for search engines to rank Web sites.

The sooner you start with your linking campaign, the better the results for your business.
