Welcome to a new issue of the Search Engine Facts newsletter.
This week we're telling you what you can do with the "info:" command on Google and we're bringing you the latest developer news about the Web site promotion software programs ARELIS and IBP.
1. How to check if a single Web page is indexed by Google
If you want to check if a single Web page of your site has been indexed by the Google index software, go to Google.com and enter the "info:" command with your Web page URL, for example
If your Web page is in the Google index, Google will offer you to show the cached version of the page, or to find similar pages, pages that link to your page or that contain your URL on the page.
If your Web pages haven't been indexed by Google yet, you'll see the answer
"Sorry, no information is available for the URL www.yoursite.com/yourpage.htm".
More Google features (e.g. getting stock information or looking up phone numbers) can be found at http://www.google.com/help/features.html.
If you want to know which Web pages of your site have been index by Google and other search engines, we recommend reading issue #29 of our newsletter where we provided a detailed search engine list for this purpose: http://www.Axandra.com/news/newsletter29.htm
2 . Search engine news of the week
* Google signed search deal with South Korean portal
Google said on Wednesday that it licensed its search technology to Daum Communications, operator of one of the largest South Korean Web sites. The company will start powering search results for visitors to Daum.net by the end of March.
Daum.net claims to have about 34 million registered subscribers and an average of 400 million page views per day.
* LookSmart wants to use your PC to improve search results
In January, LookSmart bought Grub, developer of technology that allows users to donate their computers' unused processing power to run search engine software programs that continually crawl the Web, indexing pages and words.
LookSmart could use this distributed computing power to find new, outdated or updated Web pages daily.
* FAST updates enterprise search software
The Norwegian search company FAST has added two major new features to its enterprise search products. These products are part of the company that is not owned by Overture.
3. Articles of the week
* How Google ranks news stories - and other Google news
In his Weblog, Micah Alpern has written about a seminar by Marissa Mayer, product manager at Google.com.
Q: "Why was the original UI [user interface of Google] so simple?"
A: "We didn't have webmasters and I don't do HTML."
Another Weblogger, Neema Moraveji, went to the same seminar and asked Google's product manager some tough questions:
"I asked her about Google's buyout of Blogger. Her answer made it seem like it was almost a charitable acquisition and they were just impressed by the people who work at Blogger and saw that they were doing great work - and just wanted to support them. Of course, they are definitely going to reap the rewards later. But she admitted that she didn't know how."
In addition it was said that Google would take about 40 factors into account when it would rank news stories in its news search engine, including the news site's PageRank(tm) and timeliness.
