Welcome to a new issue of the Search Engine Facts newsletter.
This week we're showing you a way how AllTheWeb can help your Google rankings, we're telling you what the latest search engine news mean to your rankings and we're making a special announcement. Have fun! :-)
1. Facts of the week: AllTheWeb can help your Google ranking
If you use a link popularity check program, you'll probably see that AllTheWeb has indexed much more links to your site than any other search engine.Wouldn't it be wonderful if Google knew about all those Web pages that link to your site? Yes, because it would improve your link popularity score and your ranking on Google. So let's submit some of those links to Google. Here's a step-by-step explanation how AllTheWeb could help your Google ranking:
1. If you haven't installed the freeware program "Link Popularity Check" yet, download it now at: http://www.CheckYourLinkPopularity.com
It's free and it comes with installer and uninstaller applications. It's also very easy to use as you will see in the following steps.
2. When the program is installed, click the "Add Web Site..." button in the main window to enter your Web site address, for example "www.your-domain.com".
3. Now select your Web site address (e.g. www.your-domain.com) in the list and click the "Update Selected" button.
4. The link popularity check program now retrieves the link popularity score for your Web site on five search engines.
It doesn't get the link popularity score from Google because Google doesn't like automated queries. Instead, it uses AOL Search for Google because that search engine uses Google internally. So the AOL numbers displayed are the same as the Google ones.
5. Most likely, the AllTheWeb link popularity score for your Web site is higher than the AOL/Google score. Now right-click your Web site address and select "Show Link Popularity In AllTheWeb" from the popup menu.
6. Your Web browser now displays all the Web pages that AllTheWeb found. Those Web pages link to your site.
7. Press Ctrl + N in your Web browser to open a new browser window. In that window, go to http://www.Google.com/addurl.html
8. Now we can submit all those Web pages that AllTheWeb found to Google. Just enter the Web page addresses from the AllTheWeb window one by one in the Google window.
Yes, it's a time-consuming task. If you have a large Web site, chances are you won't manage to submit all Web pages that AllTheWeb found.
For example, AllTheWeb found 14,768 Web pages that link to Axandra.com and AOL/Google displays only 770 of them.
However, every Web page counts and adds up to your overall link popularity score on Google.
2. Search engine news of the week
* Yahoo renewed long-term agreement with Google
In issue #23 of our newsletter we reported that Yahoo considered switching from Google to Inktomi for its search results.
Now it turned out that Yahoo renewed with Google in a non-exclusive agreement.
In addition, Yahoo changed the way it displays search results. The Yahoo directory results and Google Web pages are now combined to the new "Web Matches" results.
What do the changes mean to you?
- If you have a #1 ranking at Google, you're probably ranked #1 at Yahoo for the same keyword as well.
- The Yahoo results are not arranged alphabetically anymore. If you had a #1 ranking at Yahoo because your domain name begins with the first letter in the alphabet (e.g. a1-service.com), you'll have lost your good ranking.
- Getting a high ranking in Google is now even more important because it gets you a top ranking in Yahoo, too.
It even appears that Yahoo now returns slightly better results than Google. Although the ranking results are nearly the same, Yahoo uses its human-editor-approved titles whenever possible.
Should you stop paying Yahoo $299 a year now that Yahoo shows nearly the same results as Google? No, because being listed in the Yahoo directory improves your ranking in Google as well.

* Google is working on a new search category
The German computer magazine c't recently reported that Google is working on a new search category.
The current search categories are Web, Images, Groups, Directory and News. Now it seems that a product search is in the works.
According to the magazine, Google is currently building a huge product database. To get information about products, Google approached about 200 distributors such as Amazon, Ebay and CDNow three months ago.
